Foundation Course Religion School Teachers

The College offers a four term course which takes place either at the Sternberg Centre or in congregations where there is sufficient demand. The course is designed to train teachers for Religion School teaching and is open to all prospective,new and experienced Religion School Teachers. The course is validated by Leo Baeck College.

EDUCATION TERM

Teaching skills in the Jewish classroom, including: lesson planning, classroom control, management, the classroom environment, child development.

HEBREW TERM

The importance of integrating the Hebrew language into the Jewish classroom will be examined. Time is spent on methods of teaching that are appropriate in a religion school classroom and on practical application.

JEWISH STUDIES TERM

The main practices and beliefs of Judaism, including the calendar and the Festivals, God and Spirituality, Israel and life cycle events, focusing on how to teach these aspects of Judaism through arts, values-based education, texts and various teaching methodologies.

HISTORY AND BIBLE TERM

Explores Judaism as a chain of tradition.  Participants study biblical and historical sources with the aim of exploring together effective ways of teaching text in the classroom.

TEACHING PRACTICES:

Each student participates in 3 supervised teaching practices in the classroom. These include preparation, observation and evaluation.

DURATION:

15 Months  (4 terms,1 evening a week)

ENTRY CRITERIA:

Participants are expected to teach in a Religion School, attend the course regularly, participate in class and undertake supervised teaching practices. Students with any or no level of Hebrew are eligible.

ADMISSION:

Applications are reviewed to ensure the minimum entrance requirements are met and an interview is offered. Successful candidates are notified by post.


This course can be used as entry into the Advanced Diploma in Professional Development: Jewish Education.

REGISTRATION FEE - £50

FOUNDATION COURSE
Affiliated synagogues - £100 per term
Unaffiliated synagogues - £200 per term
